Wattpad is simply a story-sharing app which gives amateurs a platform to share their work with other writers around the world. You’ll find categories such as Science, Fantasy, Adventure, Romance and other convenient groupings which appeal to different readerships.

Wattpad’s most important feature is the fact that it allows both professional and up-and-coming writers to create and publish their content in a digital space accessible by others around the world. The content is free and is available by users on their profiles. You can share complete material or just parts of your work.
Wattpad also lets you read and comment on the stories of other users, and share your material via social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter. You can upload audio and video files for your work and connect with other writers around the world. Writers are encouraged to rate their stories to allow easy moderation, especially for younger audiences. Content is rated as ‘For Everyone’ and ‘Content for users 17+’.
Other useful tools you can use include highlighting text and syncing your account in the Wattpad cloud so that you can access content anytime and across multiple devices.
Wattpad is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch running iOS 9.0 or later. Android app compatibility varies with the actual device.

Ease of Use

The most prominent disadvantage is that the app is quite glitchy across both Google Android and iOS. These aren’t significant bugs, but they do take away from the overall experience. The app is easy to navigate, and the UI is pleasant. The latest version offers you new themes and updates for bug fixes.

For me, the design is simple and brilliant. The UI on the iOS and Google Play app is intuitive and slick, and making your way through the various screen options such as the content library and user profiles is simple. Everything is stacked in neat tiles, and the UI is fluid even on small screen devices, making the overall experience pleasant.

The app is free to install, although there are in-app purchases such as ad removal and access to monthly and annual premium content and themes. The prices range from $2 to $59.

  • Great UI;
  • Lots of great free content;
  • Offers a diverse community and a large variety for you to choose from.

  • Users might be exposed to content they find inappropriate;
  • Frequent bugs, especially on the Android app;
  • Story quality may vary.

Wattpad combines useful social features apart from letting you read and publish material. It isn’t the leading app personally for me in terms of the quality of content than I can access. However, it is a great way to connect with other up-and-coming writers, while giving you an audience to read your unpublished work if you are an amateur. I’d recommend you have this app on your Apple or Android mobile device if you love random reading or are looking for an avenue to publish your work for a global community.
