ABCmouse is an educational provider of interactive learning resources and tools for children ages 2-8 through a selection of fun and immersive activities and games. These can be varied to meet the needs of the individual learner. The resources are readily available through an iOS and Android app.
For: iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Android
Find it on: Google Play, iTunes
The ABC Mouse app provides over 3000 learning activities and over 700 lessons, all designed in an interactive, immersive and game-like fashion. The process begins with your child taking a learning assessment, which evaluates their cognitive weaknesses and abilities. These tests need your supervision, though you shouldn’t aid your child in any way to answer the questions. The results of the assessment will determine what learning level your child should be placed in. ABC Mouse makes use of a step-by-step learning curve, where once the child completes the material at their difficulty level, they can progress to the next challenge.
The material for pre-school kids covers Simple Math (numbers, shapes), Colors, Letters of the Alphabet and the environment around children. First graders get introduced to the Common Core K12 curriculum in English, Math, Science, Arts and Social Sciences.
The app uses the ‘scaffolding’ principle of learning which implies that students should apply the knowledge they have gained previously to advance to newer lessons.
The iOS version needs at least iOS 8.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The Android app requires Android 4.4 or higher.
Ease of Use
On the performance of the app, I have to say everything is seamless; no glitches or unnecessary bugs, and it works perfectly on both Android and iOS devices. However, the app will charge a subscription fee or even renew one automatically without sending a reminder to users. Many customers have complained about this, although there should be an option in the app settings not to renew a subscription. The latest version of the app is optimized for tablet devices.
The UI of the app is based on colorful animations designed to draw in the children who use the app. The animations are interactive and have a lot of depth though not the most intuitive, especially for children who are just beginning to use the app.
The app is free to get on both the App Store and Google Play. To use the app, however, a subscription is required, costing you either $9.99 monthly or $79.99 yearly. There are also other packages in-between ranging from $7.99 to $59.99.
- Frequent updates for bug fixes;
- Easy and simple to learn and use;
- Offers a wide variety of learning paths to interest students.
- Optimized for tablets and not smaller devices;
- Complaints about no audio on some Android devices;
- Needs a secure Internet connection. Should at least give users the ability to access downloadable content.
I’d recommend the ABCmouse app because it provides such useful learning utilities for kids and how easy it is to use. The app takes into account the different levels and ages of children and offers wonderful content. However, there are too many complaints regarding the cancellation of subscriptions, and one would be tempted to think that the developers do this intentionally. It would be such a great app if the developers could take care of this.
